Children

Our children’s ministry exists to share the love of Jesus with children and help them become his followers.

Sunday Morning Classes (9:45)

Nursery: The children in our nursery are lovingly cared for by Connie Scroggins, Erica Shepherd and Jamie McDaniel. They provide a safe, clean, loving environment for children to play and learn about Jesus. The nursery is located in the Sanctuary building.

Preschool: Our Preschool children gather to learn about the love of God. Bible stories and a variety of learning experiences are designed to help each child grow in Christ. The classroom is located on the first floor of the Education building next to the stairs. Their teachers are Reeta Pendley and Stacie Yarbrough-Miller.

Kindergarten - 3rd Grade: We want our children to experience the Bible and the love a life with God holds for them. Our children use a lot of hands-on-materials and activities to enter into the story of God and God’s people. The class meets on the second floor of the Education building. Their teachers are Mary Ruth Townsend, Carrie Leake & Becky Thomas.

4rd - 6th Grade: Through drama, music, and creative Bible study, this group dives into basic beliefs, values, and the virtues of living and loving as God’s people. The class, taught by Christi Heyduck and Shelli Harrel meets in a classroom on the second floor of the Education building.

Other Opportunities for Children:
Kids’ Club: When school in session, elementary aged students meet in the Fellowship Hall each Wednesday, immediately after school. They play games, have a snack, do crafts, and have a bible lesson each week.

Vacation Bible School: Each summer our church hosts around 100 children frHigh Seasom the community for a week of Vacation Bible School. This year’s VBS will be the week of July 19. We’ll Be using the High Seas Expedition from Group Publishing.

Children’s Church: Three Sundays a month, children are invited to participate in Children’s Church during the sermon portion of the second worship service. The children are taken to the Fellowship Hall where they hear and actively take part in a Bible lesson, do crafts, sing, and other activities. Christi Heyduck, Casie Yantis, and Christina Jones head this ministry.

Children’s Sermons: Mary Collins prepares a special children’s sermon each week which is presented to the children in the second worship service. The theme is usually related to the pastor’s sermon.

Acolyte Ministry: Children are encouraged to serve our church by training to be acolytes for the Sunday morning worship services.

Fellowship Events: We have family-oriented events throughout the year so that our families can fellowship together, and have an opportunity to invite friends to visit our church in a low-pressure setting. Events include a Valentine’s Day Party, an Easter party, a family picnic, a Back-to-School Swim Party, a Halloween Party, an Advent party, and a Birthday party for Jesus which includes Christmas caroling. You can see some photos of our latest Halloween Children’s Party here.

Children’s Musical: The children will have a roll in the Christmas Cantata (6pm Sunday, December 20). Carolyn Franks leads a practice session each week at Kids’ Club.

Scouting Ministry: Boy scout and Girl scout groups meet regularly in our church facilities. First United Methodist Church supports and encourages these groups as a ministry to the children of the community. Contact people are: Mike Johns - Boy Scouts, Christina Jones - Cub Scouts, and Christi Heyduck - Girl Scouts. The church will be hosting classes for “God and Me” and “God and Family” this spring.
